Podcast: TTT 012 : Understanding Autism and Asperger Syndrome with Dr Wenn Lawson
07 September 2015
Dr Wenn Lawson (formerly Wendy Lawson) is an autistic adult who is internationally known and respected for his work in the field of Autism. He is a researcher, psychologist, writer and poet and has written numerous books and articles on the developmental disorder. He has also presented at conferences and led workshops on Autism and Aspergers Syndrome around the world.
At school Wenn was considered to be intellectually disabled and initially diagnosed as ‘schizophrenic’. It was not until 1994, as an adult, that Wenn was correctly diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum.
In 2008 Wenn was awarded fourth place as ‘Victorian Australian of the year’. Sharing knowledge, understanding and experience of life encounters, including Autism and Asperger’s diff-abilities (a more positive word that focuses on different abilities), is an ongoing journey that Wenn welcomes. He is committed to creating a world where individuals on the spectrum can thrive in safety and in peace.
Dr Wenn is also the parent of four children, one of whom is now an adult on the spectrum, and grandparent to two little girls, the elder also on the spectrum.
