TTT 014 : "I teach in my hometown but feel like I teach abroad" with Kathryn Stewart

18 October 2015

Kathryn Stewart is a teacher who specialises in ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching. She currently teaches ESL and Social Studies in a small private high school in Richmond, in the state of British Columbia, Canada.  Ever since she was a 16-year-old and volunteered in an English Language summer camp she has wanted to be a teacher. In 2008, she gained a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) from Bilkent University in Turkey. Then in 2011 she completed a Bachelor of Education  in Secondary Social Studies and ESL Teaching from The University of British Columbia. Kathryn believes that learning a new language should be a positive and engaging journey. She draws on a wide variety of teaching experience and contexts having worked with children and adults in Indonesia, Turkey, Australia and Canada.  She is familiar with different learning styles and is especially interested in how home language usage can support learning in a second (or third or fourth!) language. She creates a supportive and challenging environment to help students grow as learners and meet their goals. As well as being a teacher, Kathryn is also a committed blogger for The Esperanza Education Blog where she has written a number of blogs on a variety of topics such as her experiences in the classroom, the differences between public and private education, national identity, immigration, stereotypes and the Mandarin language among others.
